MLB trade rumors: Orioles, Padres discussing Melvin Upton Jr.-Ubaldo Jimenez deal

13 giugno 2019 • Under: Offerte Speciali

THE RUMOR:The Orioles have talked to Padres about outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. and could be sending starterUbaldo Jimenez and a prospect in the deal.REPORTED BY: Fox Sports, ESPN.comand Yahoo Sports.THE DETAILS: At this point, the deal is under discu sion as a one-for-one trade, which seems unlikely.Upton comes with another year of control at$16.45 million, whileJimenez is also signed through 2017 at$13.5 million.THIS SEASON:Upton is batting.260/.309/.448 with 16 homers, 44 RBIs and 20 stolen bases this season.Jimenez is in the midst of his worst season to date with a7.38 ERA over 17 starts with a dismal1.97 WHIP.OUR TAKE:The Orioles, whohave stolen just 13 bases this year through 95games, could not only use Upton as a speed threat but also asinsurance in center with outfielderJoey Rickard outfour to six weeks after a thumb ligament injury. As the club battles with the Red Sox for the AL East crown, the upside of Upton is worth parting with a prospect despite an already thin farm system. The Padres have already dealt two starters this season in Andre Dawson Jersey Drew PomeranzandJames Shields and are expected to shipAndrew Cashner before the deadline as well, all but ridding their staff of veteran starters.Jimenez, who has spent the past three seasons struggling (5.02 ERA) in the small confines of Camden Yards, could use a change of scenery and a return to the NL West, where he dominated in 2010 with the Rockies. But San Diego can also do better than only gettingJimenez. The club needs prospects and should ask the win-now Orioles for either left-handerChris Lee (5-0, 2.98 ERA in Double-A)or right-handerHunter Harvey (2.13 ERA in GCL)in addition toJimenez.MORE: If White Sox sell, Chris Sale won’t be only one dealt

A spring training injury to A.J. Pollock derailed Arizona’s season last year, but the lineup is healthy andready to surprise people in 2017.Paul Goldschmidt has emerged as the most versatile first baseman in the game. He is also one of the best and most underrated players in MLB and would be contending for MVP awards on a consistent basis with more lineup protection.Goldschmidt may get that protection this season with Pollock and David Peralta back. Young talent likeBrandon Drury, Yasmany Tomas and Jake Lamb look like future stars as well. Goldschmidt and company should be able to get over the hump this year. The Diamondbacks’ postseason hopes rest on theshaky rotation. Shelby Miller and Zack Greinke were terrible last season. Archie Bradley and Patrick Corbin regre sed as well, while Robbie Ray struck out a lot of batters but also allowed a ton of runs.Arizona needs Greinke to pitch like an ace this season to keep the bullpen fresh after the All-Star break.Arizona Diamondbacks schedule 2017The Diamondbacks open the seasonApril 2 with a four-game series at home against the Giants.Arizona’s most important early series could be a four-game battle April 14-17 at Los Angeles against the Dodgers.Arizona Diamondbacks rosterDiamondbacks projected opening day lineup1.Ketel Marte, SS2.A.J. The Diamondbacks have a plethora of depth with Chris Owings andNick Ahmed battling to see plenty of playing time. Drury will be available at multiple positions, which could help a fantasy roster gain a little more versatility.Diamondbacks top prospect(s)Anthony Banda, LHP Banda is close to jumping into Arizona’s rotation. Last year in the minors, he went 10 -6 with 152 strikeouts and a 2.88 ERA in 150 innings. He needs to become more consistent with his command, however, after averaging more than three walks per nine innings.
